John Stossel: Insurance Makes Healthcare Far More Expensive

How do I find out who I was insured with 6 years ago if I can’t remember?

I am going to have to prove to a collection agency that I had health insurance in 2002, but I’m not really sure who I was insured with. Due to water damage in my old home, any records i had from that time period are unavailable. I know for a fact that I was insured as I have never in my life been wothout helath insurance. Plus, after I find out, how do I get a proof of insurance from them?

If your health insurance has always been provided by an employer, check with the company you worked for in 2002 to see who provided their insurance at that time. You might also check with your bank or your credit card company to see if you made insurance payments by check or credit card in 2002.

If you have an idea about which company provided your health insurance in 2002, go ahead and send the insurance company an email or call them to reqest information. If they have you in their records, they will let you know. There are only so many major healthcare providers- it can’t hurt to send emails or to call a few of them to see what happens. You can find health insurance providers online by searching on health insurance companies.

Once you determine who provided your health insurance in 2002, contact the insurance company and tell them that you need proof of your old health insurance. They should be able to provide you with a letter you can give the collections agency.

Good luck!

Finding Cheap Personal Insurance Quotes

Finding Cheap Personal Insurance Quotes

A big part of my job as a Connecticut health insurance agent is helping people find cheap personal insurance. Quotes for health or life insurance that are too high are a disservice to my clients. However price is only one of the factors that make a particular policy the right one for an individual or family.

Finding personal helath insurance for individuals at low cost that is also the right policy includes several factors:

The right network
The right deductible
The right co-pays
The right benefits

The right network
If you are looking for coverage in Texas, you will probably want to research the major health insurance providers in Texas and see which companies include your doctor as a provider. You may want to contact your state’s insurance department online or by phone and request a list private health insurance providers.

Please note that there is a difference in how the different types of insurance handle out-of-network costs. If you choose an hmo for health insurance in Texas it will likely only pay for expenses incurred in the network unless there is a medical emergency.

The right deductible.
You may do best with a low deductible plan that costs more or a lower cost plan that covers only catastrophic. A health insurance company is likely to offer insurance at both ends of the deductible scale. You may find that catastrophic health insurance rates for family coverage is the most affordable, even though you would prefer to have a low deductible plan. As a general rule, plans with lower deductibles will have higher premiums and vice versa. You will want to find a balance that feels comfortable for you.

The right co-pays
You may be able to find an affordable major medical insurance with copays that are low. This can take the bite out of a high deductible plan for day to day expenses.

The right benefits
Insurance policies and the outlines of coverage that explain the plans typically have a sections with titles that include the words “exclusions” or “limitations.” These are important sections to read before signing on the dotted line. You should know what your policy covers and doesnn’t cover before you commit yourself.

Final Tips:
Check with your insurance department to make sure that the company you choose is approved by your state. Not every plan is and a good plan. A good personal health insurance agency can help you find good coverage. You may want to ask a friend who has a small business for advice on finding a broker who can help you find a plan for major medical. Health insurance for the self employed usually purchased by the owner or spouse and they may be able to point you in the right direction.
